“Bought Amplitude, it has the exact same problem as GA4, it loses data at Shopify checkout”

Got this in my inbox last week

Helloooo,

Got this in my inbox last week. Paraphrasing, but only slightly:

"We just bought Amplitude. Paid platform, not GA4. And it has the exact same problem as GA4, it loses data at Shopify checkout. We're missing a huge chunk of sales data. Can you help?"

Read that again. They upgraded the analytics tool. The blind spot did not move.

Because the tool was never the problem

Here's the part nobody tells you when Shopify sells you on checkout extensibility.

Your checkout is a sealed room now. Custom scripts don't run there like they used to. Which means every browser-side analytics tool - GA4, Amplitude, whatever you buy next is standing outside that room, guessing what happened inside.

So your dashboard shows sessions, product views, add-to-carts. Beautiful funnel. Then the funnel just… stops.

And you make decisions on the part you can see.

Your analytics tool is not lying to you. It genuinely does not know.

Buying a better dashboard does not fix a broken pipe

This is the mistake I watch brands make on repeat.

They treat analytics as a tool problem. So they upgrade the tool. Same missing checkout data, now with better charts and a bigger invoice.

It's a collection problem.

If the data never left the checkout cleanly, no amount of visualization brings it back. You cannot chart what was never captured.

What actually needs to change

Stop asking your analytics tool to also be your data collection layer. Those are two different jobs.

The order that works:

  1. Capture checkout events server-side, so extensibility stops eating your sales data

  2. Stitch that to the browser journey, so one buyer is one buyer, not three anonymous fragments and a purchase with no source

  3. Then decide where it goes, Meta, Google, GA4, Amplitude, BigQuery, wherever you build reports

Notice the order. Collection, unification, then activation.

Most stacks do it backwards and wonder why nothing reconciles.

This is what we mean by signal engineering. Not installing another script. Owning the layer underneath your entire stack.

That's the job CustomerLabs 1PD Ops does. Server-side checkout tracking, unified profiles, then clean routing to whichever ad platform or analytics destination you want. Amplitude included. BigQuery included.

Your paid analytics tool becomes good again, because it's finally being fed.

So, quick gut check

Open your analytics tool. Pull last month's revenue. Now open Shopify and pull the same number.

If those two don't match, you already know which one is telling the truth. And you know which one your team has been building strategy on.

Reply "CHECKOUT GAP" and I'll send you get you free audit of your stack

P.S. If you're also running Meta or Google on this same broken foundation, the checkout gap isn't just a reporting problem. It's a signal problem. Your algorithm is learning from the half of the funnel it can see. That's a whole separate rant, and it's coming.
